Are bodily fluids harmful?

Yes. Bodily fluids can pose serious health risks especially if they contain blood or other infectious agents. Bloodborne pathogens, such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, can be transmitted through contact with blood or other bodily fluids. These viruses can cause serious and life-threatening illnesses.

The risk of infection depends on a number of factors, including but not limited to; exposure and route of exposure.

Bodily fluids consist of;

  • Blood
  • Vomit
  • Urine
  • Faeces
  • Mucus
  • Semen
  • Saliva
  • Bile

These bodily fluids may contain infectious and bacterial agents which can lead to serious illness. Even bodily fluids that are not considered to be infectious can be harmful if they are not cleaned up properly. For example, vomit and urine can contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning or other illnesses.
